Don't tell them they are not giants.
Every corgi knows that's a lie.
Is there any other type of dog
that serve as steeds for fairy courtiers,
or as companions to queens?
Don't tell them you know
all about stubbornness.
A river is easier to divert
than a corgi on a mission.
It doesn't matter
if it's a mission to outrun the fastest squirrel
or claim the best napping spot.
Don't talk to me
about corgi fur tumbleweeds,
sonic barks for breakfast in the morning,
operatic whines for pizza crust at dinner,
thundering paws up and down stairs,
and the jingling of tags following you
as you head towards the bathroom.
I'll take them all
over the sad stillness
of a too quiet room
in need of a spirit
with the heart of a mountain
housed in a small ball of fur.
No song this time. Just a cute video featuring corgis.

This poem was created for the prompt given at Imaginary Gardens With Real Toads: Must Love Dogs. I was the proud mom of a sweet corgi named Faye, who went over the rainbow bridge several years ago, and am currently the proud mom of a corgi named Kitsune (Kit for short). They are different from each other in a lot of ways, but there were some strong similarities I drew from to create this piece.
here here... me too thank you for the smile...
ReplyDeleteYou are quite welcome :)
DeleteKitsune...perfect name for the color. Our animals are do dear to us and when they die, the silence is indeed so large. My best friend had three: Mulder, Scilly, and Bass, because he was so low. He has never replaced his pups any more than I have replaced my last cat, four years ago. They are such adorable rascals but...their absence is so hard.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Delete"Kit for President!"
ReplyDeleteYes, I just sort of shouted that. So there. I'm grinning from ear-to-ear at this poem. I love how the sonorous tone and hysterically serious mood makes me think of every wee dog I've ever met. Every small is a king, a giant of giants, a small god pretending.
How I love this bit, "operatic whines for pizza crust". The image of it made me roar.
I mean seriously - the weird noises that emanate from his weird furry self when it's pizza night. He sees the boxes come through the door and does a little dance. He also sits right next to me because he knows I'm not going to eat the crust to save a couple of calories.
DeleteOh how totally adorable, and i am stoked that you have a pet page. I will check it out. I am slow making the rounds as, since i hit the farm, we three adults have been totally focussed on one very smart, high energy Australian shepherd. She is very active and keeps us hopping. Ken is busy trying to puppy proof. The other day she ate thru the front on the brand new washing machine. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteWe used to have neighbors with an Australian Shepherd. Those are super high energy dogs. Faye might have been able to keep up with one (I'm fond of the above picture of her because she looks like she's almost ready to run). Kit on the other hand likes to keep things sloooooooow.
DeleteGreat tribute to your corgis — indeed, the choice of queens! Loved knowing one who owned a neighbor.
ReplyDeleteQueens, and weird nerdy women too. :D
DeleteCorgis are so cool. Wasn't it a Corgi that was in the movie "The Accidental Tourist"? Everyone laughs delightedly at my dog's short legs, but I think these guys have him beat in that department!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Accidental Tourist, though I heard it was quite good. I'll admit the first time I heard about the breed was in an anime (Cowboy Bebop). My husband was waging a strong campaign to get me to agree to having a dog. I said "Maybe" after he suggested getting one like the dog in the show. Soon after we stopped at a place with a dog rescue. What are the chances they'd have a corgi, I thought. They did - a little girl corgi puppy in a cage with a St. Bernard. It was love at first sight for both of us. I miss her little stumpy legs running all over the place. Kit's not too much into running, but he is into cuddles, so that's good.

much love...
I love this... what a wonderful dog, with such brave heart. There is something special with small brave pets.
ReplyDeleteCorgis are such happy dogs.. and belong to happy owners, I have no doubt.
ReplyDeleteThe heart of a mountain.....i love this. Faye certainly left her footprints all over your heart :)
ReplyDeleteI like your idea of having a small corgi dog for Queens. Now though, their will be at least one beagle brought by Duchess Megan. I think Queen Elizabeth II likes this one.

They are just amazing little creatures but can extend 'bigness' in loving care!

I like the way you described how it is living with dogs. Indeed a house is quiet without one, if one has ever had one in one's life. I have three, and I recently took them ALL in for teeth cleaning on the same day. Talk about QUIET! I was glad when they returned. Each breed has its own peculiarities. I like the way you described the Corgi way. And, oh the delight in the sound of those jangling tags! (P.S. - I have never personally known a corgi. Sigh.)
ReplyDeleteI love this! Corgis are such happy and adorable dogs!💜
ReplyDeleteA wonderful poem to enlighten those who do not know this dog breed or others who have strong wills and personalities....I love the end as it is exactly why we have these wonderful creatures in our lives.
ReplyDeleteI love all breeds and mutts. I'm just a dog lover. I love what you've learned/lived with corgis.
ReplyDeleteOK!
ReplyDeleteWhat an excellent post about corgis and the cute links we could go to...loved it
ReplyDeleteA cute little dog, and a great poem.
ReplyDeleteThey sound like interesting companions.
