Touching a Daydream: Blogging Around With Rommy, Week 3

Everything
started off
as someone’s fancy
that refused to stay
insubstantial.

The Liner Notes for This Groove:

So I had a phone call with a friend recently…

Me: Guuuuuuuurl…

Her: It arrived didn’t it?

Me: Yep, in a plain non-descript brown packaging, but it’s here.

Her: Ooooooh… have you opened it?

Me: I’m doing that now.

*tearing of paper ensues*

Me: Oh my, this is…

Her: Tell me everything.

Me: I never thought I’d be bold enough to hold something like this in my hands. Just, wow.

Her: I’ll bet you’re caressing it right now, aren’t you?

Me: Caressing. Fondling. Sniffing. It looks damn good on my bedspread. I think after I spend a little time with it, I’m going to leave it here for my husband to find. I think he’s even more excited about it than I am.

Her: It’s great he’s so supportive.

Me: Mmm-hmm. We are both going to have a very good time with this.

Just chilling, drinking some deep red tea,
and reading my book with my foxy new manicure.

There’s something about holding something that just started out as a few random ideas. If as Ann Patchett said “Writing is a job, a talent, but it's also the place to go in your head. It is the imaginary friend you drink your tea with in the afternoon” getting to hold the finished product is like seeing your imaginary friend walking around in broad daylight.

Did you ever get a chance to hold something that you only imagined before? If you have a cyberhome, elaborate on how that felt and drop the link in the comments. Or feel free to start up some conversation on what’s going on in your world.

    1. I had to pause a moment and just take in the fact that yeah, "I did that." LOL, then I called a friend to squeal.

  3. I think many of us as kids have dreamed of having a bicycle. We generally can't even ride it until we learn how.

    1. Confession time - I still can't ride a bike. I was really an uncoordinated kid. But I should have tried harder.

  6. CONGRATULATIONS! I had a cancer scare a few years ago and my one regret was i had not out my poetry into book form. When the tumour turned out to be benign, i got busy. I now have a shelf of books, and add at least one more every year. It is INCREDIBLY satisfying! Enjoy your accomplishment. Yay!

  7. Congratulations Rommy! I’ve had poems in anthologies and that’s a great feeling, but to have your own whole book of fancy is truly wonderful. It’s a bit like giving birth and holding your baby for the first time.

    1. Yes, it kind of is. I'm just glad recovery time was quick and I could drink all the caffeine I wanted while I was incubating it. :D

  8. Congratulations Rommy! A book sounds fantastic ( for me, almost unimaginable), though holding tickets to a country I never imagined I would visit is a terrific feeling!

  12. How exciting to hold a published book of your own writing!! I Cant even imagine.
Many years ago, I did buy my Harley before I knew how to ride it. I signed up for a class to learn and to get my license while it sat in the garage waiting on me. LOL

    1. Oh that is seriously cool! I've only ever been on the back of a motorcycle once, but it was like flying. It must have been amazing to get to ride it for the first time.

  13. Wow, congratulation Rommy! I'm excited for you getting to hold your book in a published format! That's so cool.

Hmm, let's see, I had wanted to be an astronomer when I was younger and one summer, in high school, my Grandparents took me to the Southwestern states to see museums, learn some history, see the country and experience it. It was hot and I spent a lot of time in the car traveling. I'm not the biggest fan of the desert but I did love learning the history. One day when I had grown tired of watching the world pass through the window, I stuck my nose in a book and started reading while waiting to get wherever we were going for the day. My Grandma told me after awhile that I couldn't have anything that played the radio on. I didn't and wanted to know why. She said I would see soon. Not too long after that she told me to look out the window and in the approaching distance, I could see radio telescopes. I had recently seen the movie Contact and loved it, and then here we were, in at the VLA where Jodi Foster's character worked when she picked up the alien message. I was so excited! The VLA had a small video about the place and what radio telescopes do and are for and then we got to go look at them up close. I think I took a whole roll of film in pictures that day. They were so pretty and the trip there was so amazing!

  16. Some imaginings are too real to be denied their stories.

I just received my print copy. As you know, I've owned my digital copy since mother-pixel pushed it out. I have been fondling with my mind. Doing the same with my hands is glorious--love the feel of the paper, and seeing Shelle's artwork on the cover is yummy! Sending you mega-congrat!

The exchange with your friend made me giggle. I bet she's sexy and brilliant and tells the most inappropriately hysterical jokes.

The answer to your question: the first thing I got to hold, which I only imagined before, was a telephone that belonged in my home. I know how weird that sounds. But the majority of my childhood and some of my teen years, in the Dominican Republic, involved having to walk quite a distance to borrow (all right, rent) a phone to call my father in the US. The first time I picked up our own phone to call Papi I burst into tears.

  17. She is also a mistress of subtlety, that one. 😂

And that is a really sweet story about your phone. I'll bet your dad might have misted up a little too, knowing how much easier it was now for you guys to talk to each other.

  25. So true! Everything starts out with a dream, with something imagined that you don't believe to be possible. I remember when I published my first book as well...to hold it in my hand was really an amazing thing! We all need to keep dreaming and keep fulfilling our dreams!
