The darkness doesn’t mind
which side you choose to greet it on.
I prefer to say hello
accompanied by only
the scent of my first cup of tea.
I love discussing the world
with my darling youngest.
I love laughing at its foibles
with my darling eldest.
I love sharing new experiences
with my husband.
But this dark, shifting
around on the far end of night
when all but a few patient stars
have withdrawn for the day,
is just for me,
and my wild ideas
that need steeping
in deep darkness
alongside my morning cup of tea.

"But this dark, shifting
ReplyDeletearound on the far end of night

is just for me,
and my wild ideas
that need steeping"
This reminded me very much of Sylvia Plath. I love this piece.
Oh that's really high praise! Thank you!!!
DeleteSteeping wild ideas -- love that image!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI've become one of those sleep-wake-sleep night guys, so I never know where I fit in on the spectrum.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful work, Rommy!
I have a few friends that way too. Hopefully you get some good rest between the oddness.
DeleteI love this, Rommy, and share the love of having the darkness all to oneself.
ReplyDeleteI like the different connotation of 'morning' from the usual in that morning cup of tea!
Re-reading your prompt, and then this poem, I see I had it a bit wrong, lol. And yet, your rising-in-the-very-early-morning darkness is probably not very far from my finally-going-to-bed-in-the-early-morning darkness.
DeleteLOL, I have a friend who goes to bed just before I get up too
DeleteThis is gorgeously rendered, Rommy!💝 I resonate with; "my wild ideas that need steeping in deep darkness alongside my morning cup of tea." Thank you so much for the glorious prompt!😍🥰
ReplyDeleteThanks Sanaa
DeletePoetry writers are born night owls, but nicely written for early birds (at first I read "far end" to be the end of day, very, very late. I often write in my jams on the edge of the bed. The Mrs. is in Ambien sleep and I write an hour or two to finish later unless I finished. If she sleeps in I write again, post seven or eight.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting, it is a fun write.
..
LOL, there are a few early birds in the ranks ;)
DeleteReally enjoyed this, the inclusion of family is perfect as is the end of the day.
ReplyDeleteThanks Helen
DeleteI love this. It conjured up some amazing images for me. Thank you

Delete"when all but a few patient stars"
ReplyDeletemy favourite line. Happy Wednesday
much love...
Hope your Wednesday is happy too
DeleteVery nice!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI like the idea of life on the edge of darkness, the beginning or the point between light and dark. The moments of change. Interesting
ReplyDeletewild ideas ... steeping (along with your tea) LOVE that.
ReplyDeleteThat is the best part of waking up is knowing it is morning tea time then with that drunk the day may begin!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful..It is rich in elements that delight..family, tea, greeting the dark..
ReplyDeleteYou, the shifting dark, the leftover stars and the tea. They all belong to you. Right then. That moment. Shhhhhh....
ReplyDeleteLove the opening lines.. !!
ReplyDeleteSo important to find time to be yourself!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant opening stanza. I also like the intimate moments captured, interaction with loved ones as a natural progression of the day. And the last stanza speaks to me; the privacy and aloneness with my thoughts in wee hours of the morning is bliss!
ReplyDeleteAn idea that's not steeped is not worth keeping. At least that's what the leaves in the tea cup seem to say to me.
ReplyDeleteLoved, loved this Rommy--I am on my second cup this early morning
ReplyDeleteThis reads like being with you in the kitchen, watching you and listening to you (in a total non-creepy way) interact with your family and yourself. I so love this, especially the glimpse into your creative process.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely, relaxing poem. Peace is welcome. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday Rommy
ReplyDeleteMuch❤love
I will never again see the early morning stars without thinking of them as patient! I'm most likely nodding off as you are having that morning cuppa. This was a delightful read.
ReplyDeleteAnything- is alright with a cuppa! Love this
ReplyDelete(My apologies for a late response...covid- 19 had me busy! )
