Of Sound Minds and Bodies

When asked what I was like as a child, my go-to answer is “pretty much your average paperweight.” Leave me in a spot with a book and there I’d stay until someone came to pull me out of my mental Narnia. As you might imagine, I wasn’t all that physical of a child (unless music was involved—I did and still do love to dance).

I first started working out as a teen because of vanity, then kept it up because of the mood boost I get. As I’ve mentioned other times on the blog, I even learned to appreciate playing sports as an adult. Fitness is a regular part of my routine.

I was proud of myself for keeping up with working out through the pandemic, because even when I was tired, I still wanted that endorphin bump and feeling of accomplishment. Then a few days after I came back from vacation, I rolled my ankle and managed to tweak a ligament on the top of my foot.

I won’t lie. I had lots of ‘poor me’ thoughts for the first few days (especially when I was told I might have broken something). And it didn’t help that I relied on that mood booster in the months that followed a very dear friend’s death (to be honest, I still have horrible days where grief swallows me whole). But I remembered the example of another dear friend, who keeps getting some wicked curveballs thrown at her fitness routine. If one way is closed, try another, and another, until something works.

Turns out YouTube is quite helpful for finding routines you can do without putting weight on your foot. I don’t get the same rush, but it was mentally soothing to me to be able to do them, and then graduate to walking around the block later. Last week I got cleared to go back to my usual routine. I’m glad I took it slow and didn’t reinjure myself. 

My long-term fitness goal is to be the abuelita chasing her grandkids on the playground. But I have a new appreciation for the short-term mood boost benefits too. My body and brain are finally on the same page.

    1. LOL, the physical therapist tried to get me to balance one-footed on an inflatable disc. I told her I couldn't hold that pose for 10 seconds even before the fall! I'm delighted I made it to 3!

  2. I wish I had your resolve. I think I never grew out of the paperweight stage, except instead of a book I've always held a paint brush. Sigh.....maybe someday. :)

    1. I think its less resolve and more disliking the way my hips feel if I sit for too long. I'm more motivated by my comfort than anything else. :D

  4. My Beloved Sandra has been strong-arming me (in the most loving way) into some ever-increasingly long forced marches downtown. At least she's kind enough to include some lakeside scenery in the torture.

    1. My husband and I have become great walking buddies during the pandemic. LOL, we don't have a lake within walking distance, but our town is pretty cute and scenic.

  7. Trying and trying and trying... until something gives is one of my favorite mottoes. I am so happy that you've been cleared to exercise as you like it again. It's good when our minds and bodies are following the same drum.

  8. Good for you, Rommy! Between you, you and Magaly might inspire me.

    I was a child like you, but didn't grow out of it to learn to love sport or exercise. What exercise I did, I did for the expected benefits to my looks (in body shape) rather than my health or mood!

    Luckily, someone told me walking is the best exercise, and most of my life it has been what I've chosen, and enjoyed. Also I like a bit of swimming now and then. But I don't do either very vigorously; much too fond of stopping to smell the roses (or photograph them) and floating on my back.... Ah well.

    1. I wish I could swim better. I took a class to learn how. I'm still not good at all, but I can paddle around a pool for amusement.

    1. I'm in the Philadelphia suburbs, but we got smacked pretty hard too by Ida. 7 tornados confirmed in the 'burbs, including three in my county. My family and home are safe (an itty bitty trickle of water in my basement during the worst of the flooding... and Kit was not amused at having to go down there when the tornado warnings were active). But when I went out driving the other day I was horrified by the wide range of damage I saw in a nearby town. The usual vista of trees was gone in some spots, with nothing but cracked trunks giving you a clear view to wrecked homes.

    Rolling your ankle is the WORST. :(

    I agree on dancing being the most FANTASTIC way to work out. And floor work is a good backup when you’re injured. 8-Minute-Abs is a very funny and effective video on YouTube. I highly recommend it. :)

  18. i like your article here. i've been big on my health and diet for several years now and it really does make a difference. i stay fairly close to my routines and i pays of. last year i had gallstones and a hernia, i couldnt work out all all. it was a miserable year, so i definitly don't take it for granted anymore.

    1. I'm 49 and been lucky so far with injuries. But I've definitely seen enough happening to friends with chronic issues that I learned early on to appreciate what I've got.

  20. I'm glad you found a solution to one-footed exercise. My wife broke a bone in her foot (after being told it wasn't broken by first DR office) and she uses the stationary bike.
    I cut weeds on a regular basis during the summer and my winters are a mix of shoveling snow for fun and no profit.

    I found a "new" anime: Girls und Panzer that I think I'll have to watch soon.

    1. Shoveling is a hell of a workout. I know I've had people in my neighborhood tease me about being out there instead of my kids, but they can use the Wii to get their exercise. :D

      Haven't heard of that anime, but I'll keep an eye open for it on Crunchyroll.
