Find A Good Home For My Teas

Find a good home for my teas.
Make sure they will be gladly drunk
by people who will think of me
fondly, warming their hands
around a full mug.

I’ve had love, so much love,
pouring freely through
the dark corners of the labyrinths,

and wearing smooth
the odd-shaped cracks
that made up the mad tea party
I called my life.

I’d like to think some of that
love will come through
between the sips of tea

(maybe a few moments of laughter too)

long past the time
the warmth from it fades.

Song Choice: Earth Song by Harry Bellafonte. I've told the children this is one of the songs I absolutely want played at any sort of funeral they hold for me.

This poem was created for the prompt given at Poets and Storytellers United, Weekly Scribblings #37: Last Messages.

  2. This is so you, Rommy! I love it! I adore the lines:
    ‘…wearing smooth
    the odd-shaped cracks
    that made up the mad tea party
    I called my life.’

  5. I believe those moments of laughter will be brewed into every cup of memory having to be with you. Even while crying, there will be Rommy-myrth. It's just natural--too many souls loved, and will continue to love, the mad party that is you.

    1. I certainly hope so. LOL, and I hope my children will honor my wish to have Groucho glasses passed out as memorial favors so that a field of Grouchos will bear witness as part of my ashes get planted with a tree.

  11. I saw this awhile ago while traveling the internet highway and thought of you. Saved it for you. Perhaps you have already seen it, but that's ok. Yours is lovely poetry.

    “If you are cold, tea will warm you;
    if you are too heated, it will cool you;
    If you are depressed, it will cheer you;
    If you are excited, it will calm you.”

  12. This is so beautiful Rommy. I agree with Jim, save it. I love the idea of your loved ones reminiscing about a life well lived. And laughter in between sips is just precious.

  13. What a beautiful poem this is. It is not hard to recall all the wonder, the beauty and love in ones life and to understand it's sadness too.

  15. Greetings Rommy, This si lovely... I really enjoyed the way you've used drinking tea and all associated with it as a metaphor for love... And you make it work so well here.. Great idea! Wish I'd thought of it!

  19. I love this and, as a tea lover, I relate. I like the idea of thinking of my life as a Mad Tea Party and all my belongings being tea for others to use when I'm gone.
