Restraint

I know you are there,
and the world stops.
It has to, you see.
There are too many things
pushing me, pulling me,
demanding me,
and all I can do is make sure
to save the spaces for you.

Those moments are far too few;
it’s like pointing to the moss in a sidewalk crack
calling it a garden.
Yet, they sustain me.
Here I breathe.
Here I burn.

The world starts again in those moments,
our world.
Words and sounds
sealed up in the old one
rush from me.

I cannot stop touching you.
My skin too long denied
the presence of your hands and lips
has its own demands to make,
yet delights in yielding
to the desires of yours.

Too soon
we return to where we were.
And delight must give way
to sensible adulthood,
littered with busyness.
But it only lasts,
until the next time
the world stops again,
when we can sate ourselves once more.

This poem was inspired by the prompt given over at A Dash of Sunny.

  2. You captured perfectly that dance we do with our partners when we can hear the music that calls us to passion. It is, indeed, sad that we can barely hear it through the raucous noise of our day to day lives. Thanks for the beautiful reminder!

    1. Oh indeed, but when the noises of life fade, what a glorious dance to be had!

One runs smack to reality to suddenly realize adulthood takes on with lots of responsibilities! Great lines Rommy!

  4. I love the delightful realism of this poem, the passion for the way life happens and how the poem lives and loves every step of the way... taking care of the "busyness"... read to continue the dance when the tunes changes (and makes the dancing possible... and delicious).

    1. I'm glad that aspect of realism comes across, because yeah the reality of sick kids and work deadlines can be slow things down, but it can't stop what's there from being expressed.

until the next time" may there be a next time, and a next time and a time after that. Lovely

  7. Yes, we should always save the spaces, make the time to notice the little things, and reconnect with each other, let the word fall away for awhile. :)

  9. Very real about finding the space for love in the busyness of our lives. My parents used to manage this so much better than I did!
