Savage Children

My offspring are cruel.
No, not the ones drawing blood to eat.
They only do as they must;
no different from the ones
eating plants, sunshine or the already dead.

Addiction is monstrous to see in ones you love.
Addiction causes them to forget and abuse family.
To power, to gold, to oil,
to dollars, to euros, to yuans –
it doesn’t matter what the addiction is.
They don’t need it, but they crave it,
willing to kill or let others die
for just another injection.

I have done what I could,
sent reminders of what is at stake
should they continue on like this.
I fear I shall bury them all, and soon,
with my tears all used up
for the ones they took with them,
leaving me only with rage.
At least my children who feed on death
will have full bellies then.

  1. Naming addiction was a brilliant move, for what else can it be when we know better but cannot do better? Superb writing, Rommy, superb!

    1. Addiction destroys so many lives, it felt like an apt metaphor to use.

    1. It was the best metaphor I could come up with to get across what I wanted.

  4. It's sad, isn't it? One world isn't enough for all our differences and one Earth isn't enough for our greed! :(
    Such a lovely piece, though...

    1. Thank you. I'm glad it expressed what I wanted it to, but it was very sad to write.

  5. I can taste her tears through her words, her sense of loss, her disappointment at the knowledge that there is nothing more she can really do for them.

The first line and the last two are just incredible.

    1. Thanks, this one was not the easiest thing to write, all joking about prompts involving writing aside.

  6. Addiction is monstrous, indeed. There's no satisfying the compulsion and intolerable abuse. A moving piece, Rommy!

  8. How beautifully you have written this Rommy. How on earth do those that are addicted to profit from destruction expect their children to survive when their bank balance means nothing.

  9. Wham with the insight Rommy, yes addiction at it's selfish neediest without a care of consequence or future ramifications of not only the addict but for all. Really love this powerful twist with the prompt!
