Reflections on Negativity While Walking My Corgi

A bit like fertilizer really,
with all the stink and none of the nutrients.
It seeps up from below
where you might miss it at first,
though something smells off.

Ignored,
it will gradually work its way in
soiling the things you once took joy in.
Every step leaving an imprint,
perfuming the trail for those that follow.

Miasma most foul -
don’t let it into your home!

Negativity happens.
Just deal with it as soon as it does.

My corgi, Kit.

  2. Wow. What a nice analogy you've crafted here. Good write. Also, cute Corgi. He looks happy and calm.

    1. He's a sweet love bug but super lazy. My first corgi Faye was a hyper ball of energy. She rarely stood still for pictures.

  3. First of all, the title put a grin on my face: I knew something wicked this way was coming.

I second what Elena said, wonderful "analogy"! And I will add, skillful way of showing how a bit of bright (even when life stinks a bit) can brighten the mood. It might not always work--I mean, constipation of emotions can certainly be an issue--but if we push, there will be relief.

Can you tell I loved this poem?

    1. Sometimes you have to find a bit of the funny because it's the only way to make a dent in the negativity - it's like J.K. Rowling's boggarts. Laughter can be very effective in dispelling it. Though sometimes lots of paper towels and water are necessary :D

  4. What a sweet pup! I think it is wonderful you put such a witty spin on negativity! Well, we have stepped in it, and we've all had it hit the fan, thanks for showing us the bright side!

  5. Very true. And such a bad trap to fall into.

    1. Pretty much. It seems less silly of course when knee deep in it, but finding the modicum of humor sometimes is the clue to the way out of the trap.

    1. Exactly! Perhaps not Shakespearean in tone or imagery, but still pretty on target. *snicker*

    1. Very true! Even if my sweet little guy spends more time staring at a squirrel in a tree than actually walking. :D

  11. Well done, Rommy. This piece flows so easily even though it deals with deeply serious issues. I especially liked the line that says negativity "seeps up from below." And I love the last stanza.

    1. It was fun playing with a theme that seemed silly but quite universal to get something deeper across.

  12. I love the wry and knowing humour through this - and can certainly empathise as am currently sporting a dark cloud with chin straps - negativity is a foul little weed..and yes..stinky too - thank you for the sunday :)
