Fare Thee Well: Blogging Around with Rommy Week 31

Photo by Anders Jildén on Unsplash

Wind scatters petals
sighing perfumed memories
as they fly away.
Still, I am grateful for spring
and the sight of the full bloom.

This poem is linked to the Tuesday Platform over at Imaginary Gardens with Real Toads.

Liner Notes for this Groove: Someone who has been a dear friend to my husband and me since college is going to be moving away this week. Logically we know this is the best thing for him and his family. The cost of living will be much less, there are older relatives there who need care, and littles who will be adored by said relatives. But even though we live in a golden age of communication, we're still really going to miss the whole family.

We got to spend some time with them before they headed out on Sunday. First we did Chinese buffet and as Ella Leya said in The Orphan Sky, “The conversation ran as fluidly as the tea out of the samovar’s crooked nose.” Then we hung out in our mutual friends' arcade and played like we were still all college kids (until the aforementioned little ones were ready to drop). It was one of the best ways to say goodbye that I could have imagined.

Here's to Woody and his family...safe travels, best of luck. House Driks will miss you.

    1. Technology today sure makes things a lot easier than they used to be. I think we'll still keep in touch. :)

  2. Yes, it sounds like they will be missed. I love the image of all of you playing games in an arcade. It sounds like a lot of fun.

    1. LOL, we're all kids at heart so it was a blast! I went nuts on the Dance Dance Revolution game.

  3. Spring has arrived in the southern climes.. too short though. I am dreading a very hot summer.

    1. Yeah, I've heard summers can be brutal where you are.

  4. I understand how you feel, Rommy. Our ex-nextdoor neighbours have been gone since just before Christmas and we still miss them terribly; we’d lived next door to each other for nineteen years. We are slowly preparing to sell up and move closer to Ellen and Lucas, which will also be a wrench.
I like the idea of perfumed memories flying away.

    1. *hugs* Sounds like you are going through your share of changes too. I hope that you will find enough sweetness in the days ahead to carry you through them.

    1. Indeed, even though we know spring will return, there is that sadness

  6. Such a wonderful farewell — it's always a bit difficult when people close to us move away. "sighing perfumed memories" is my favourite line here. :-)

  7. That samovar quote is so apt... nice analogy to the scattered petals.

  8. Those first two lines are beautiful. Very difficult when a good friend moves.

  9. Wonderful metaphor... yes, cherish what is now, for it won't always be. Sounds like a downer attitude, but it really isn't!

    1. Exactly. I wouldn't have traded my college years or having them nearby for anything. I'm grateful to have had that. :)

  10. Your linear notes give context to your poem and I love the image of perfumed memories in the form of petals being blown in the wind. It's always sad to see good friends move away.

  11. I think moving is one of the stressful events in life, for both the moving and those left behind. We sometimes lose friendships solely because of distance. I really hope you are able to stay in touch. <3

    1. I do too. We still have social media and stuff like Skype to get us through.

  12. Saying goodbye is never easy. Yes, we have the memories... And yes, they can be going to a better life... But, love is selfish and needy--we want closeness, and when that is take away it hurts. Sigh.

The best of luck to your friend.

    1. I'll pass the good wishes along. I try to keep in mind what a good move this is for them. It helps--a little.

  13. As they 'fly away,' I like that you wish them well in spite of your sadness. Hopefully you will have times to get together, even if it is a distance to travel. Good friendships live on.

    1. I think we will try to coordinate some vacation plans together too at some point. Hopefully we'll connect in person then, but Skype will pull us through until that time.:)

  17. A wonderful post … tenderly penned … with great affection. When roads diverge: some times we see it happening … some times we don't. But always, looking back, they are 'perfumed memories'.

  18. Blooming flowers tell us that all is OK even when we lose friends that are close. Old that I am I'm still in contact with friends from many years ago even those abroad. Do try to do that.

  20. I love your poem. And I can relate to the sorrow of seeing loved ones move away. My only daughter moved away a month ago. We communicate daily, yet knowing she is far makes me miss her terribly.

  22. I was the one who moved away – a good move I cannot regret ... except that I had to leave behind good friends whom I now see seldom. (Can only say, thanks be for the much-maligned facebook.)

Your tanka is very beautiful, delicately sweet-sad, poignant.

    1. The first stage of transition is done for them and they seem to be settling in well, so that's a good thing. :) But yeah, we'll miss them.
