The Sum of My Experiences

I don’t remember a time
when my imagination didn’t have a yen for flight.
I was always the odd sprout in the cultivated flower bed.

I suppose it was easy to dismiss my fancies
as yet another song of a space cadet,
solitary and adrift in an imaginary orbit
because silence beckons more than playground noises do.
Many did.

But I never saw myself as afflicted
when in my mind I had adventures
as grand as any Miyazaki heroine.
Having myth in the blood isn’t a disease;
it’s an advantage.

As an adult I’ve thought about the past,
and decided I’m happy for my daydream addled youth,
even if others saw me as peculiar, and still do.
My ukiyo-e colored internal landscape
would have been far poorer without it.
Any ink child of mine
would be a stunted and malnourished thing
if not a steady diet of faerie song.

  2. I think that's exactly how to find your path. Really make sure you're always have a steady supply of supplementary faerie's song.

    1. I recommend at least one good playlist full of them.

  3. I love this, Rommy--and your titles add to the quirkiness of the narrator's persona, someone so sure of herself that she can afford to be both weird and vulnerable. I especially liked: "Having myth in the blood isn’t a disease;
    it’s an advantage." I *so* agree.

    1. I started playing with the titles I wanted and the quirky evolved soon after. I'm pretty happy with the results.

    it’s an advantage."

    May I please marry these lines? I promise to work hard at the art of making them happy. I will remind them everyday just how pretty, wanted, and completely loved they are.

    I love this entire poem. But yes, the lines above are favorites (a poem (of truth and wonder) in two lines).

    And I might have to bring your last three lines into the union, too. :-D

    1. I'm pretty proud of those two as well. I'm thinking of continuing my wicked little grooves past April (though at a much less frenetic pace - I could use with a bit of slowing down) and that one is a strong contender for future use.

  5. I love your phrase "myth in the blood." And I love the poem it comes from, which I went and read again.

    1. I still love that one too. Not all my stuff looks so great a few months later, but that one makes me smile.
