Not With a Bang, But With a Selfie

Roma Aeterna glows tonight from the light
belched by hand held toys.

The wisdom of the empire,
the artists’ strivings, the philosophers’ warnings,
are at the fingertips of both plebeians and patricians.

Though admittedly when the circus comes to the senate
it becomes difficult to distinguish sages from buffoons,
and harder still for stalwart stewards to make anyone care
to take the time to note the differences.

Some are beginning to tremble, realizing no wall will help them,
because gilded Attila is already inside
using an ochreous fist to become ringmaster.

Others ignore the smoke before the burning,
to snap a picture of themselves beside a dead gladiator,

#CarpeYolo.

  1. Whoa! Politics, politicians, technology captured so well! Gilded Attila, selfies with dead gladiators. Your words hold great power and show us a mirror, if we dare to look, Great piece!

    1. Thanks, this one feels like a big departure from a lot of the stuff I normally write. My original thought was to approach the prompt from a light-hearted angle, because so many of the stories I love do a lot of world blending. But I decided to give into the mood pulling me to go another way.

  2. This is just perfect, Rommy! Gilded attila indeed, (not to mention Carpe YOLO!) It's all about bread and circuses til the mob gets ugly--then it's time to get out the fiddle and watch the decline from front row seats.

    1. I fear the mob is already pretty darn ugly at this point. I hope I'm wrong.

    1. Thanks. I wasn't entirely sure if I had the right spirit of the prompt, but thought carpe yolo and decided to run with it. :D

  5. "#CarpeYolo", indeed! This word alone, my beloved Rommy, is a poem, a story and masterful statement of culture and living. You do satire so yummily. The phraseology gets the blood going, in ways that push the brain to do its job critically. I just love this, especially: "when the circus comes to the senate / it becomes difficult to distinguish sages from buffoons"... because it's so very true.

  6. Your talent drips off you as luxuriously as fat off my waistline. There is so much to love about this, you've made the YOLO ethic into something as tired and mundane as absolute power corrupting absolutely. Falling deeper in love with your words... Moskowitz

  7. Ah.. what an excellent satire... those selfies beside the dead gladiators and the gilded Attila, there we are, realizing we didn't even get the bread, realizing that you cannot eat the circuses.

    1. Neither circuses or selfies are very filling.

    1. Yeah, and as happy as I am that the poem got everything I wanted to say out, I'm terrified. This isn't a bit of random goofiness from my brain, it's happening now.

  9. Now that is a political synopsis I can believe. Satire hangs its hook on reality. Great stuff!

    1. Thank you. Satire can be a tricky thing to pull off and I'm glad I managed it.

  13. Rommy, this is just top notch, from the senate to the hashtag carpe yolo, you've done such great work here. I particularly liked the balance in the tone of your narrative, there is a sense of bittersweet and world weary. How so very well done! Viva la and thanks for posting.
