All Winter in a Day, Blogging Around with Rommy Week 12

The glitter-glass water fell last night
in a melodious hushing shush
I strained to hear over your snoring.

(please, wake up)

There’s a tingle in my snout
as I dream of little bursts of cold
melting all over my fur and tongue.

(Please. Wake up.)

I hear the barbaric chittering
of my foes, flaunting their villain’s tails
as they revel on top of your car and my tree.

(Please. Wake. Up.)

The slushy crisp crunch of feet
attached to giggles and mittened hands
ready to rub my belly
goes ambling along outside the door.

PLEASE. WAKE. UP.

Liner Notes for this Groove:

This poem was created for a prompt (created by me) as part of Imaginary Gardens with Real Toads NaPoWriMo extravangaza. I asked people to write about a situation that would scare something they were afraid of as a child. As a kid, I was terribly scared of dogs (alough I'm a certified dog-lover now). I couldn't help writing one of my dog's biggest fears - missing out on winter fun.

I know I've shared this image before, but sadly there is no snow today for Kit to claim.

So Groovers is there something that scared you as a kid that you grew to like later in life? Or how is NaPoWriMo going for those of you who are playing along? Tell me all about it in the comments section, or just talk to me about how your week is going. If you’d like to continue the conversation on your cyberhome, drop the link in with the rest of your comments. I’d love to visit.

  1. I am so glad you overcame the fear of dogs.. but I love the voice of this poem - the dog looking for reassurance from the man.

    1. Faye was actually my first dog. The first time I held her as a pup I realized how silly I was to miss out by being afraid. She was so nervous around people. But she grew up to be a very valiant dog. I think her only fear was letting the family go unprotected. LOL, my current goofy pup gives me a lot to work with.

    1. Shhhh... if you say it too loud, he'll demand a belly rub. :D

  3. Give your dog a belly rub anyway. I am more than sure he deserves it. Good dog!

  4. Oh that sweet dog!! I was petrified of june bugs. They fly around porch lights and they've got round hard bodies. One of them dove down my shirt and popped around like popcorn inside and it scared me so bad. I was running around screaming but I didn't want to smush it inside my shirt on my body. My mom yelled at me to raise my shirt and it flew out. I hate them to this day!

    1. Oh I'd be freaking out too and I'm fairly composed about bugs in general.

  5. I love this poem. It reminds me of my own dog when she wants to come with me. I especially like the progression of Please Wake Up, I can feel the tension building :-)

    1. LOL, it was my attempt to recreate his noises. He starts making snuffling noises when he hears anyone moving on the bed. His noises get louder if he suspects you are actually up but just don't want to get out of a warm bed. :D

  6. This is so eloquent in its portrayal of the fears we have at first before overcoming them. That dog is adorable!💖💖💖

  7. Ha, I was afraid of dogs too, as a child. But overcame it so long ago that I'd pretty much forgotten that. I love them now. (Though I'm foremost a cat lover, still my very best pet was a large dog.) Much enjoyed your poem once I had the explanation for who was speaking.

    1. I like cats too, but I require a dose of Claratin to be around them.

  8. Very nice, Rommy. We have experienced the fear of dogs in our youngest granddaughter as she tries and mulls ways to be rid. It is hate/love as she actually likes dogs but is afraid. Wish I could help her.

    2. I feel for your granddaughter. It's tough to be scared yet want to be near one at the same time. If you know a very gentle and sweet natured pupper it might not be a bad idea to plan some very small increments of time where she can see the doggo from a distance. The goal would be to lengthen the time in each other's presence while decreasing the distance.

LOL, my dog would *almost* be good for that job, but he loves being around children so much that he'd whine something awful if there was one nearby he wasn't allowed to go to. We've had to convince him more than once to keep walking away from folks who don't find him as irresistible as our family does.

    1. I'm glad it's gone too, even if it means my goofball never lets me sleep in on a snowy winter morning.

  12. First, I just love the thought of Kit chanting "please wake up" until the words becomes a magic roar that gets him exactly what he wants and needs. And second, I still can't believe you were ever afraid of dogs. From now on, when I talk to people about overcoming their fears, I shall start with, "Let me tell you the tale of a woman and her impatient (but adored) corgi..." This was fun.

Here is my bit for this week:

    1. It still surprises a lot of people who knew me when I was young, how much I love dogs now. LOL

  13. Wow, this is one of the best poems by you, Rommy! Love how the poem starts, the progressive build up of rhythm and repetition and the decisive end. Very beautifully written!

I LOVE dogs, and it's hard to imagine one could be afraid of. This of course, is hypocritical coming from me because I'm "secretly" afraid of cats but I just pretend not to like them...lol!

  14. I enjoyed the sounds in this poem, Rommy, especially the ‘glitter-glass water’, the ‘melodious hushing shush’ and ‘slushy crisp crunch of feet’. I shivered when I read:
‘There’s a tingle in my snout
as I dream of little bursts of cold
melting all over my fur and tongue.’

  15. Your puppy is so cute!
The way you described everything in your poem is amazing Rommy!
I'm trying to think what I was scared of when I was younger. This might sound weird, but being in a truly loving relationship. Growing up with parents, who cared, but argued all the time, I thought "marriage" was bad and something that scared me!
    Big Hugs!
