Patience's Price

I knew before I left
that I might not find you easily
in a kaleidoscope world

that only doles out little teases of you
refracted then spread out in the open…

the mischief in your eye,
the way your hair falls just so
waiting for my hand
to push a rebel strand back into place…

fragments of you everywhere
making me yearn all the harder
for the whole of you,

though I had resigned myself
to patience. I grit my teeth
enduring counterfeit shades
and the tedium in between false glimpses.

Those will never satisfy me
when I know the true taste of you
will be savored when the time is right.

  1. This is such an incredibly poignant poem, Rommy!❤️ I could feel every emotion especially; " the mischief in your eye, the way your hair falls just so waiting for my hand to push a rebel strand back into place."❤️

  2. Seeing someone for real is so much clearer when apart... I hope the time is right soon

    1. It was perfectly right for a time in San Francisco, but housework and office work wait for no one. :D

  3. Some things, some thoughts, some people... never leave the inside of our heads or hearts. The way they look and feel (and make us feel) is just too much part of who we are to be farther than just a thought away. Even if the entire world is at our disposal, none will do but them. And when they are there... ecstasy!

    The last stanza is magic.

    1. Exactly. I don't know that I believe that any person can make us "complete", but the right ones make it easier to remember all the parts of ourselves.

  4. It’s not easy to spend time away from the one you love, Rommy, and you describe that so well in the lines:
‘…I might not find you easily
    in a kaleidoscope world

that only doles out little teases of you
refracted then spread out in the open’.

All those little details you describe, the things that cannot be captured in photographs, can be found in all sorts of places when least expected. I love the lines:
    ‘…I had resigned myself
to patience. I grit my teeth
    enduring counterfeit shades
and the tedium in between false glimpses.’

    1. Yes! It's more that photos or images. It has to be when you love someone.

  6. I love the idea of a "kaleidoscope world". You have described well the feeling of being apart.

  7. Really nice... I don't think you intended this, but reading it on the morning of Mother's Day, I can see this describing the distance that grows when children get older and are far away. Beautiful.

    1. LOL, you reminded me that my son inherited his father's "Superman curl" (a little swoosh that lays in the center of both their foreheads when it's been awhile between hair cuts). Though my son has really let it go and he looks more like Greg Brady than Superman. :D

  16. An eloquent, tenderly penned expression of those 'fragments' that come when one is parted from their love - and yes, almost seem to tease that absence all the more. Wonderful writing in this!

The longing in thid poem is so strong. Indeed when you love someone and yearn to be eith them, little teases just will not suffice

  18. How important it is to establish trust early in an affair so that you don't have feelings of doubt about their love and you of theirs. Mind you it may take a few liaisons before you get that right!

  21. Nice extended metaphor - ambiguous enough to be about a relationship - but also a spiritual journey - not falling for the sham, patiently waiting for the shaman.
