Rediscovered Wings

Imagine what it would take
for a dragon to rediscover her wings?

You would have to ask
what made her forget
she had wings in the first place.

How could she have left behind
the feel of her muscles working
in defiance of logic and physics?

To remember her wings
is to feel all the things
associated with flight—
the whistle of the air as she glided past
the feeling of rising
above the clouds
to let sunlight dance over scales.

If she could forget all that
how hard would it be to remember?
Would the fear of confronting the shame
of forgetting keep her from acknowledging them?

Or would the joy
of being whole again
leave shame and regret on the ground
while the dragon soared higher
on her rediscovered wings?

  2. Just what I needed, Rommy, dragons and wings! I especially love the lines:
    ‘To remember her wings
is to feel all the things
    associated with flight—
the whistle of the air as she glided past
    the feeling of rising
    above the clouds
to let sunlight dance over scales.’

    1. It wasn't really meant to be a quarantine poem, but I guess it can be read that way

  6. Poor baby, forgetting her wings. It would be harder to learn to use them again when they were rediscovered. But, maybe she would have to use them in a different way.

  8. I hope joy (or even the thought of it) would become fuel, energy that can't be touched by shame. So that she can remember. And like Debra, quite eloquently put it, "SOAR!"

  9. I appreciate this. I think many people can relate to having "rediscovered wings" or at least wanting to rediscover their "wings."

    1. I think many of us have been on a hunt for ours at some time or another.

  10. How apt this is for many of us who are encouraged to isolate ourselves and only go out for essentials or an emergency. I could do with wings and perhaps go for a trip high in the sky to feel I have done something!

  11. I like. this, Kestril, it reminds me of my SIL. She had a serious stroke in Mid January and is now in the process of recovery. It left her wish pretty much nonfunctional in her right side. The therapists are trying to get her right side to rediscover it has functions. There has been a little bit of progress but now much. Sometimes the body finds new nerve paths to use in cases like this. Repetition of motions are good for the wings. We cannot visit her in he Rehab home because of shutout due to Corona 19 Virus precautions.

  14. Ah - the joy of re-discovering ourselves and being free to fly again.
Sometimes the needs or the burdens of our 'present' temporarily defeat us and we curl inside ourselves, for protection, for safety and almost crush who we are.
And then we recognise our strengths, the strengths we always had, break free and fly fly fly...
