Hard Reset

I’m looking for a hard reset.
Silence. Enough
to allow my gunpowder emotions
time to settle down from their fine mist
and lay quietly
away from incendiary sparks.

I’m looking for space
where I don’t have to
MacGyver my emotional state
and self-suture the same old wounds.
One where I can really rest
and learn what healed skin looks like.

I want to find
what it feels like to know
an extended peace
in my battlefield brain,
so I can reclaim the salted earth
and put it to work
growing only the things I chose to plant.

Song Choice: 24/7 by Kehlani

Liner Notes for This Groove: This poem was created for the Weekly Scribblings prompt at Poets and Storytellers United: Wait for It. I may have twisted the line I chose to work with "I'm looking for a mind at work" as far as its limits could go.

  3. I feel this poem, Rommy, especially the wonderfully expressed lines:
    ‘Silence. Enough
    to allow my gunpowder emotions
time to settle down from their fine mist
    and lay quietly
    away from incendiary sparks’
    and
‘so I can reclaim the salted earth
    and put it to work
growing only the things I chose to plant.’

  4. How honest you are to admit gunpoweder emotions. I don't have a garden anymore but I remember the odd plants and vegetables that appeared where they were not planted. Clearly I was not the only garden there!

    1. I'll just bet squirrels had something to do with it. The sneaky things are always digging up stuff in my flower pots.

  6. Looking for a mind at rest! Nice work. Your mind was at work when you wrote the poem about resting it.

    1. LOL, I was trying to decide how to go with this prompt when the idea came to me that it would be nice to not have to think so hard. :D

  10. ....and therein lies the answer .... "growing only things I choose to plant!" It seems to take a lot of living before we grow wie enough for that. An evocative write, Rommy!

  11. I love that "gunpowder emotions." Also, self suturing the same wounds, we do that much too often. Need to find a way to avoid the causes of the wounds.

    2. You could help me clean out my home office. It got out of hand and is now the "junk room" by default. When I retired my daughter helped me clean my office, that took us three days. This might be even longer.
Thank you for the neat Hamilton prompt lines, I chose living versus dying options. While writing I had just found out that writer, Hunter S. Thompson, had died of suicide 16 years ago. I had read one of his books, I liked him but never went back. But it fit in with the prompt that I used. Plus all the friends and acquaintances that I know who had killed themselves. Even my first and second grade girl friend.

  19. I enjoyed the whole poem--truth in poetry is the best read meals. And I love the last stanza. It feels like a poem all on its own, a poem for the times. After so much turmoil, I think each and everyone of us shares the speakers wants.
