Blue Period

A lifetime of loving and gathering
so many brilliant and subtle hues

yet I find my hand seeking
for Picasso blue,

reaching for the shade
to underline a year’s worth of words.

Liner Notes for this Groove: This poem was created for the Friday Writings prompt at Poets and Storytellers United, Color or the Absence of Color

  1. And oh, what a wonderful blue it is! Everyone thinks purple is my favourite colour because I wear it a lot, and I do love it – but my true favourite colour has always been blue, and most of all this deep, vibrant blue I see here.
Thinking over what I know of the year you've just had, I imagine your choice of this colour reflects unbearable grief. Yet there is also so much light in it, which I trust is true for you too. ("we are weeping for that which has been our delight" – Gibran.)

    1. I adore sky blue and flame red. Those colors make me very happy. Of course I also adore purples and greens. That is a lovely quote by Gibran.

  2. I find blue a very peaceful colour and not sad, but I know it represents sadness for a lot of people

    1. It depends for me. But yes, overall, I think of blue as soothing. Maybe its soothing quality is just what's needed when things get super heavy.

  3. Picasso had double blues, frequent recoveries from the drunken state and also from getting involved with the down trodden folk he was painting in his scenes. But "the blues" saying was around before his time. I had not heard of "the Picasso blue" as a color before reading your poem. Thank you.
An aside, about half of my wardrobe has a blue emphasis. I don't think I am feeling depressed, most times. I pretty well, at my age, figured out how to recover from a case of the dumps. Not booze though, I only drink wine socially most times, I had two bottles of beer last year, three of the six are still in my refrigerator.
I'm sure your Picasso blue painting is pretty, I'd like to see some. On your blog?

    1. Success!

Yeah, I took a look at several recently on line and I was struck by the depth of emotion in them. They didn't sell very well when he was alive though.

  8. I like the idea of giving a year of words (and of living) a color. I wonder what color 2021 would be...
